I was fortunate enough to get a very early version of Jeff Selingo’s new book, Who Gets in and Why: A Year Inside College Admissions, and I immediately knew I’d be buying extra copies to give away. It’s engaging, it’s juicy, and I could not put it down.
I actually don’t know how Jeff convinced three colleges to let him document their entire admissions process, but I’m so glad he did. This is the first book I’ve read that clears up the mystery of why one kid gets in while another is waitlisted or rejected. He digs into the obvious factors such as class rank, test scores, and athletics, of course, but he also considers the impact of legacies, the family donations, and a lot of other factors that nudge admissions panels in one direction or another.
