I just found out that the East Woods School in Oyster Bay, NY, has opened my next NY-area speaking engagement to the public. If you'd like to come hear me talk about giving your kid the gift of failure, and you can find your way to Oyster Bay, come on down! 

My talk centers around the research on directive and controlling parenting, why it doesn't work over the long term, and how to step back so your kids can gain a sense of autonomy and competence in their lives (and you can chill out, knowing that helping them less is the stuff of great parenting). Because I'm an English teacher and I can't help myself, the story of this research is couched in a literary analogy. That's how I roll.
